EUROPE'S BEST MOTORCYCLE, DRIVING, & CYCLING ROADS

GORGES DE DALUIS - FRANCE

Konkr Roads Rating: Gold

Also Known As: D2202

Road Length: 3.7 Miles (6 km)

Claim to Fame: Endless Red Rock & Road Splits

Best Time to Konkr: June to September

It may seem odd that a 6 kilometer long, hairpin-less road made the Konkr Roads Gold list, but those who have had the luxury of experiencing the Gorges De Daluis fully understand.  The Gorges De Daluis road is quite possibly the most unique stretch of pavement on our entire list.  The road is a beautifully paved balcony road that winds its way through the gorges that took millennia to carve.  The road is two lanes, a rarity, and has multiple splits to one-way single lanes to keep the traffic flowing and the scenery uninterrupted.  A series of tunnels keep even the most avid driver or rider on their toes, and the perpetual red rock fires synapses for years to come.

GREAT DOLOMITES ROAD - ITALY

Konkr Roads Rating: Gold

Road Opened: 1909

Also Known As: Die Große Dolomitenstraße (German); Grande Strada delle Dolomiti (Italian)

Road Length: 134 Miles (215 km)

Claim to Fame: Granite Mountains & The Sella Pass

Best Time to Konkr: June to September

Ah, yes, the majestic Dolomites of Northern Italy.  Truly a site to behold.  What's more magnificent is that a series of roads run through these mighty granite mountains, and the collective best is Great Dolomites Road.  This road is a small collection of roads that zig-zags its way from Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo and features numerous serpentine climbs as well as well groomed, but thin, lanes that twist about the countryside.  The Great Dolomite Road is fitting for the whole family, as Northern Italy's prized lake,  Lago di Carezza, and unique Andraz castle makes a trip to this area fun for all.

STELVIO PASS - ITALY

Konkr Roads Rating: Gold

Road Opened: 1825

Also Known As: Stilfser Joch (German); Passo dello Stelvio (Italian)

Road Length: 22 Miles (35 km)

Max Elevation: 9,045 ft (2,757 m)

Claim to Fame: Featured on BBC's Top Gear as "World's Greatest Road"

Best Time to Konkr: June to September

No "Worlds Greatest Road" conversation is complete without mentioning Italy's famed Stelvio Pass.  The 60+ hairpin turns and blistering grade make this road a challenge for drivers and cyclists alike.  The scenery at the top surpasses the imagination--it's hard to believe such a road was built by man and not Martians.  The road quality is so-so, and the traffic can be daunting in the middle of the day, but an early outing accompanied by a cup of hot java will last a life time in memory.  Have a look at our detailed road review video below for more on the Stelvio Pass.
